Art & Life with Mikhaile Solomon

DECEMBER 6, 2018

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mikhaile Solomon.

Mikhaile, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I was born and raised in Miami, Florida and am of Caribbean heritage. My parents are the from the islands of St. Kitts – Nevis. I graduated of Florida International University’s Graduate program in Architecture and completed my undergraduate degree in Theatre Arts at the University of South Florida. With my varied professional experiences comes many years of developmental work in design, education, arts advocacy and community development.

In 2013, I founded and currently serve as Director of Prizm Art Fair, a cutting-edge art fair that expands the spectrum of exhibiting international artists from the global African Diaspora and Emerging Markets during Art Basel Miami Beach. Prizm’s mission is to exhibit a diverse roster of artists whose works reflect global trends in contemporary art, through a series of cultural events which culminates in our annual curated fair. Prizm’s roster includes artists from the Caribbean, United States, and Africa. Prizm has been featured in the New York Times, Miami Modern Luxury and is deeply thankful for the support of the unwavering support of the Green Family Foundation and Knight Foundation.

My professional background has instilled a great capacity for leadership and her continued service to the Greater Miami community through the arts. Her hope is to help strengthen Miami’s cultural offerings and to participate in the creation of more creative opportunities for its residents.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I’m the Director of Prizm Art Fair, a cutting-edge Fair, exhibiting artists from Africa and the African Diaspora whose work reflects global trends in contemporary art. Our Fair runs concurrent to Miami Art Week and currently preparing for its 6th edition.

A few years ago, after graduating from Florida International University’s School of Architecture, I was working on a few projects that very quickly sparked my interest in becoming involved in the arts. Many of these projects focused on the African-diaspora visual arts and aesthetic landscape, which deeply resonated with me. I didn’t really see much of the work I was discovering in my research at Art Basel and felt that I could work on an event that would feature these works and include many of the talented artists that I have the pleasure of working with locally in the project. I began Prizm in 2013.

I hope visitors of Prizm will be inspired by the breadth of content and the nuance that the works exhibited at Prizm provides. There will be 8 Galleries and 63 individual artists exhibiting at Prizm th is year. There will be plenty to digest and appreciate deeply.

Any advice for aspiring or new artists?
As I continues to work in the arts, I understand how important it is to have business acumen. So much of the arts landscape is transactional. I would advise that artists arm themselves with knowledge of business to preclude exploitation of their talents as much possible.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
With the generous support of the Green Family Foundation, the Knight Foundation, the Greater Miami Visitors and Convention Bureau and the Miami DDA, Prizm Art Fair will be located the Alfred I. DuPont Building in Downtown Miami, 169 East Flagler Street.

To support Prizm, patrons can donate to Prizm Projects on Give Miami Day buy donate to our https://givemiamiday.org/npo/prizm-projects-inc. You can also support by visiting our Art Fair December 3 – 9 the Tickets are available at http://bit.ly/PRIZMTIX.
