Mixed Media on Watercolor Paper, 2015
The intention of this artwork is to contribute to the dialogue regarding representation of Black personhood by focusing on the portrayal of the Black Child throughout age appropriate materials and media. The artwork includes modern imagery of African American characters that reflects the younger members of the African American Community. It is important that the children within see their image positively reflected with in their neighborhood environments, via media, artwork and other forms communication. I am using toys and cartoon characters to engage the youth by appealing directly to what they relate to for fun and entertainment. Additionally, the use of iconic imagery such as the American flag and the Stature of Liberty stamps prompts the children to further analyze and/or question these emblems and hence their role within of American society. This work was commissioned by the Department of General Services and is permanently featured at Barry Farms Recreation and Aquatics Center.
